Weather in Berlin by Ward Just,

Weather in Berlin by Ward Just,
For decades, film director Dixon Greenwood has lived the Hollywood life -- the studio intrigues, the abrupt rise and fall of careers, grand aspirations come and gone. Dix"s own fame rests on his one great work, SUMMER, 1921, an antiwar classic that has become a cult film. Now he believes he has lost his imagination and genius for reading the times. His audience has vanished. So, on a kind of personal rescue mission, he embarks on a three-month journey to Germany, the birthplace, as he sees it, of the twentieth century. In postwar, post-Wall Berlin, Dix finds the winter skies gray and the cultural climate turbulent. While fellow artists debate politics and art, he discovers that a nostalgic Prussian costume drama is the most popular program on German television. With decidedly mixed feelings, he agrees to direct an episode -- a fateful decision that unexpectedly reunites him with an actress who disappeared from the set of SUMMER, 1921 thirty years before. Their final collaboration takes Dix into the heart of the German century and back to his own imagination. THE WEATHER IN BERLIN showcases Ward Just"s unmatched eye for restless Americans abroad. Imbued with the glitter and darkness of both old Hollywood and the new Europe, it is a terrifically atmospheric novel by "one of the most astute writers of American fiction" (New York Times Book Review).

Hans Poelzig: Reflections on His Life and Work
Hans Poelzig: Reflections on His Life and Work
Julius Posener was twenty-two years old when he entered Hans Poelzig's design course in Berlin. During his three years of study with Poelzig, the student was captivated by the man, and convinced by the teacher. Having remained close to Poelzig, to whom he would refer thereafter as "My Master", Posener has produced an eloquent memoir of one of the most important twentieth-century German architects. His detailed study of Poelzig is the first to appear in English. Several of Poelzig's major works, such as the Berlin Schauspielhaus interior and the Capitol Cinema - also in Berlin - appear today to epitomize German Expressionist architecture. And yet Poelzig distanced himself from the so-called German Expressionists - Bruno Taut, Erich Mendelsohn, Otto Bartning, the Brothers Luckhardt. For Poelzig, architecture should be a natural development out of the past, rather than the creation of new forms. At the same time that he criticized the Expressionists, he challenged a younger generation that included Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. Posener sets Poelzig's work within the context of this most fertile time in the history of architecture. For many decades, Julius Posener has made major contributions to the history of modern German architecture in his books, articles, and lectures. He has taught at schools of architecture in Britain, Kuala Lumpur, and Berlin, where he lives at present.
